I am terrible at making decisions. It’s just too much pressure, and the weight of the responsibility stresses me out. Even the tiniest choices feel like too much, and I find myself avoiding them altogether. I always worry I’ll end up letting someone down no matter what I pick—so, yeah, you get it: decision-making is not my strong suit.
But today, that changes. It’s time for me to learn how to make decisions and actually start somewhere. I need to map out a tentative schedule and lesson plan. The good news? I can always adjust things along the way, but for now, I just need to get all my ducks in the same pond.
After a lot of overthinking (of course), I’ve finally decided on the subjects and lessons I want to start our year with:
Social Studies
U.S. Studies
We’ll cover states, capitals, the thirteen original colonies, the flag, the national anthem, the three levels of government—you get the idea.
English
6th Grade Review
I’m still figuring out exactly what this will include and am on the lookout for good ideas and curriculums.
Math
6th Grade Review
I need to see what each kid is already comfortable with and what areas they need extra practice in.
Science
Biology
We’re going to kick things off with a lesson on cells and see where it leads us from there.
Electives
Now, for the fun classes, I’m planning to rotate different courses throughout the year. I want to incorporate:
- Life Skills
- Bible
- Typing
- Art
Reading
I also want them to read one book each quarter and complete a mini project or essay about it.
Books I’m considering:
- Holes
- A Child Called ‘It’
- The Outsiders
- The Hunger Games
(this list is still a work in progress, so I’m open to more ideas).
…and anything else these children decide they want to learn about.
(Rant: I’ve asked them at least a million times, “What do you want to learn this school year?” and, as expected, their answer has been, “I don’t know.” Very helpful, kids. Very helpful.)
