08. real-world ready: life skills for your homeschool.

Today, while sitting at my desk answering customer calls with Investigation Discovery playing in the background, I had a moment of clarity: so many adults lack basic life skills. Manners, money management, responsibility, even understanding simple laws—these are things many of us were never really taught, yet we’re expected to figure them out as adults.

My mom used to say, “Listen to my advice, or you’ll learn the hard way.” Of course, I’d roll my eyes, ignore her, and then life would humble me pretty quickly.

Now that I’m homeschooling, I don’t want my kids to learn everything the hard way. I want to send them into the world prepared, confident, and capable. So, in between calls, I started jotting down a list of life skills I want them to learn this year (and in the years to come).

Here’s what I have so far:

  • Memorizing their Social Security number
  • Writing a check (even if it’s outdated, it’s good to know)
  • Organizational skills
  • Basic first aid
  • Doing their own laundry
  • Making simple meals
  • Understanding needs vs. wants
  • Saving money
  • Learning about stocks and investing
  • Knowing basic laws

Honestly, the more I thought about it, the longer the list grew. There are so many everyday skills that will help them thrive as adults, and I want to intentionally weave them into our school days.

After a little research, I was surprised to find tons of free resources to help teach kids these life skills, especially in money management. If you head over to the “The Good Stuff” section at the top of this page, I’ve linked several sites with free lesson plans, worksheets, and curriculum options you can start using right away.

This is one of the things I love most about homeschooling—the freedom to teach my kids things they will actually use in real life. Looking back, I wish I had learned about credit scores, budgeting, and buying a car or house while in school instead of memorizing random formulas in chemistry class.

What about you?
What life skills do you wish you had learned before stepping into adulthood?
And what skills do you want to make sure your kids know before they leave the nest?

Drop them in the comments below—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
