09. from breakfast to blessings: adding bible to homeschool

Our family is religious, though our church routine has been a bit rocky in recent years. I grew up Catholic before transitioning to the Lutheran faith, and my children were baptized in a Lutheran church. We used to attend services regularly, but once COVID hit and church switched to online-only, our Sunday mornings at church quietly slipped away. It’s been hard to get back into the routine, but maybe when our homeschool year starts, it will be the perfect time to ease back into it.

With that in mind, I’ve decided to add a Bible curriculum to our homeschool days this year.
My son attended a Christian private school through sixth grade, so going to chapel on Thursdays and having Bible as a “regular” class was normal for him. On the other hand, my stepdaughter has been in public school and is excited to learn about the Bible, but she’s starting from scratch. I want to be mindful that our lessons don’t overwhelm her while still keeping my son engaged.

So, I’m starting with the basics: teaching them The Lord’s Prayer. Don’t judge me—I know this is something many kids learn early on, but if there’s one thing about me, it’s that my intentions are always good, even if my follow-through sometimes needs work.

I haven’t picked out a full Bible curriculum yet, so for our first week of school, I created simple worksheets for them to practice The Lord’s Prayer. Since my son learned cursive in private school and my stepdaughter only prints (we’re planning to teach her cursive this year), I made two sets of worksheets to meet them where they are. You can grab them [here].

Today, my goal is to research Bible curriculums that will work for us. I don’t want it to be boring or feel like a chore (like catechism did for me growing up). I want them to enjoy learning and to build a foundation that sticks.

If you have a Bible curriculum your family loves, please share it in the comments! It would be a big help to other families looking to incorporate Bible study into their homeschool days.
